Hotel Monterey Le Frere Osaka: My Self-Paid Umeda Hotel & Bath Review

For the first stop on our Osaka–Kobe trip in Japan, we chose Hotel Monterey Le Frere Osaka in Umeda —and I was happy to be back!
I’d stayed here once before and had been really happy with the location, facilities, and friendly service, so booking it again was an easy decision.
There’s also a large communal bath inside the hotel—just what you want in the evening after a full day of walking around Japan.
1. Umeda Hotel Location: Hard to Beat
The location was one of the biggest reasons I chose Hotel Monterey Le Frere Osaka again.
Walk through the sprawling underground passageways around Osaka Station, come out at Exit 11-43, and the hotel is literally right in front of you.

This is the view as you come out of the exit. When it’s raining, freezing, or sweltering outside, a hotel that keeps your outdoor walk to a minimum is a real win!
That shop on the ground floor is a drugstore. I needed pain-relief patches during the trip, and being able to pop downstairs to buy them was so convenient.

Walk about 10 steps into the side street, and you’ll find the hotel entrance.

Reception is on the second floor. There are three elevators, too, so we never had to wait long.

There’s also a Lawson convenience store by the hotel’s rear entrance on the ground floor. It’s a good-sized branch, not a tiny one, with a freshly prepared food section and coffee. Having it right in the building was such a plus.
2. Hotel Monterey Le Frere Osaka: Essential Information
Check-in: 3 p.m. / Check-out: 11 a.m.
Parking available: ¥2,000 per night
Facilities include breakfast, a large communal bath, a sauna, and coin-operated laundry.

We visited in October, so the lobby was decorated for Halloween.

The second-floor lobby has a seating area and a luggage scale, and the breakfast restaurant is on this floor, too.

Farther inside, there’s a coffee machine, microwave, and ice machine available for guests to use.

At most hotels, you have to tap your key card in the elevator before you can select your floor.
Here, you can use the elevator without tapping a card. Instead, there’s an automatic security door between the elevator area and the guest-room hallway, and you tap your card there.
It sounds like a tiny detail, but I found it much more convenient than tapping a card in the elevator!
3. Great-Value Room Rates
With its convenient location, large communal bath, and affordable rates, this is a Umeda hotel I can confidently recommend.
Rates can start at around $74 per night. The difference between a standard room (19 m²) and a corner room (26 m²) is usually only about $1–$15, so I’d personally go for the corner room!

Last time I stayed in a standard double; this time we booked a corner room. At 19 m², even the standard room isn’t especially small compared with other city hotels in Japan.
Still, the corner room felt noticeably more spacious and comfortable. For a $15 difference, I’d definitely choose it again.
Rates vary depending on your travel dates and when you book, so check the current prices for your stay.

4. Corner Room Review
We were assigned Room 1221 on the 12th floor. Start with the video for a quick look around.

I’d stayed in a standard room on my previous visit, but since we were traveling with our baby this time, we booked the larger corner room.

At 26 m², it would feel wonderfully roomy for two, and even with the three of us—including our baby—we were comfortable. The room can accommodate up to three adults.

We asked for the two twin beds to be pushed together and requested bed rails on both outer sides in advance for our baby.

The beds and bedding were so comfortable that the whole family slept soundly every night!

The desk doubles as a vanity and workspace, with plenty of room to spread out our things.

It looked like each room also came with a combined air purifier and humidifier.

Across from the beds, there’s a TV and a small table for tea.

The bathroom wasn’t overly cramped, either. It had a bathtub, and everything was clean.

All the disposable essentials we needed were provided, including toothbrush kits.

You can adjust the heating and air-conditioning yourself in the room.

There’s a full-length mirror near the entrance,

with a closet opposite it. Inside were a safe, fabric freshener, room slippers, and other essentials.

The slippers were nicely cushioned, too—not the flimsy, cheap kind.

Coffee and tea were provided, along with two bottles of water each day.

Since the hotel has a communal bath, we also received extra towels in addition to the ones in the bathroom. There was loungewear to wear on the way to the baths, and the fabric felt so nice that it doubled as very comfortable pajamas!

There was even a basket for carrying our things to the bath. My daughter absolutely loved it.

At check-in, they also gave us a children’s amenity pouch. Somehow, she immediately knew it was hers and kept a firm hold on it!
5. Breakfast and the Large Communal Bath

There’s a buffet breakfast restaurant on the second floor, but we skipped it because there were so many breakfast options near the hotel.
Breakfast costs ¥3,800 per adult, and children under six eat free. The reviews I read were positive, with guests praising both the taste and the variety.

If you love a hotel breakfast, rather than adding it separately at the hotel, booking a breakfast-inclusive rate from the start can be cheaper—often enough that it’s worth comparing the options before you book!

The large communal bath is on the third floor and has generous opening hours: 6:00–9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.–midnight.
That late closing time means you can enjoy a leisurely dinner out and still come back for a bath and sauna session.

Hotel guests can use it at no extra charge, with no reservations or limit on visits during opening hours.
For the most detailed and accurate information about using the hotel facilities, check the information sheet provided by the hotel.

If you’re looking for a Umeda hotel that’s convenient for shopping in Osaka, Japan, or a well-located base for exploring both the city and nearby destinations, I wholeheartedly recommend Hotel Monterey Le Frere Osaka.
