Sushisakaba Sashisu Maing Review: Affordable Sushi at Hakata Station, Fukuoka, Japan

Hakata Station sushi review: Sushisakaba Sashisu Maing in Fukuoka, Japan

Since my hotel was near Hakata Station, I kept looking for places to eat around the area.

This spot is also inside the Hakata Station Transit Center,

in the Maing shopping mall.

The restaurant is called

Sushisakaba Sashisu

酒場

Sushisakaba Sashisu Maing Branch
1 Chome-1 Hakataekichuogai, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, 812-0012 Japan

For detailed info, just check Google Maps!

It had a 4.7 Google rating, so I went in without much hesitation.

Hakata Station sushi at Sushisakaba Sashisu Maing

There can be a wait during peak hours,

but maybe because we went a little later in the evening,

they just cleared a table and called us in pretty quickly.

By the way, what does “Sashisu” even mean?

I looked it up and still couldn’t figure it out.

It’s located inside the building on the first floor,

so I’m adding a few surrounding photos in case they help.

There was a menu board outside,

so I took a quick look before going in.

It was even written in Korean, which made ordering easy.

After a short wait, we were shown inside.

All the tables were full, so we ended up at the sushi counter.

The chefs were working on a slightly raised platform,

so I couldn’t really watch them make the sushi,

but the seats still felt cozy and comfortable.

If I stood up just a little, I could see the ingredients.

The fridge looked super clean too.

I cropped and zoomed in on parts of the menu

so it would be a little easier to read.

You order by plate, kind of like conveyor-belt sushi,

and the cheapest items start at around 150 yen, or about $1.

The pricier eel was around 500 yen, about $3 to $4.

There were also multi-piece plates

and roll options that cost a bit more but came in bigger portions.

And it wasn’t just sushi—they also had grilled beef and simmered fish,

chicken, fried dishes, and salads, so the menu was pretty varied.

My husband ordered a kakuhai highball,

and I started with a Suntory draft beer.

The sushi came out fast after ordering,

so it’s totally fine to order a little at a time.

The first thing we tried was Ebi Seven,

a raw shrimp dish topped with seven shrimp.

Looking at it like this, it’s kind of intense, right?

Meanwhile, the salmon and tuna arrived too.

You break the egg yolk and mix it with the shrimp before eating.

And surprisingly, there was rice underneath too.

It was close to 1,000 yen, around $7,

and honestly it wasn’t amazing—more of a visual menu item than anything else.

Soy sauce and wasabi were already set at each table.

I was a little disappointed that the soy sauce came in disposable packets,

but the taste itself was totally fine.

The sushi wasn’t one of those mind-blowing, best-ever meals,

but for the price, I thought it was solid.

Flounder was a miss for me, though.

That was the one piece I clearly remember not liking.

If you go here, this is the one thing you should order.

The Korean menu called it tuna belly seaweed roll,

and it was soft, rich, and genuinely delicious.

It came as a six-piece roll, so it was more filling than I expected too.

I actually wanted to order one more plate of that,

but it was getting late and we were fuller than expected, so that was it.

I even thought about coming back one more time during the trip

just to eat that tuna roll again, but it never happened.

The timing didn’t work out, so I never made it back to Maing Mall.

Here’s the receipt—when I ran it through Papago,

the item counts looked mostly right, but a few prices seemed off.

Still, I just let it go…

Even if something was wrong, what was I going to do about it at that point?

Anyway, the two of us ate pretty well and left very full for about 40,000 won,

so overall it felt like a pretty good meal.

To be honest, I wouldn’t tell you to go way out of your way for it,

but if you want an easy, casual sushi meal near Hakata Station,

this is a convenient spot that’s worth considering.

And if you’re staying nearby, check out my Hakata Station hotel post too.
