Dotonbori Dessert Review: Strawberry Mania & Lord Stow’s Egg Tarts in Osaka, Japan

If you’re hunting for the best Dotonbori desserts in Osaka, Japan, these are the two spots I genuinely loved: Strawberry Mania for strawberry sweets and Lord Stow’s for egg tarts. I visited both around the Dotonbori area, and they were easily two of my favorite dessert stops in Osaka.

Two dessert shops I really enjoyed in Osaka.

One was Strawberry Mania, a must for strawberry lovers,

and the other was Lord Stow’s, famous for egg tarts.

I visited both near Dotonbori.

There are three or four Strawberry Mania locations just around the Dotonbori area,

and the one I stopped by was the branch near Takashimaya Department Store.

This is the location I visited.

I didn’t have to wait in line when I went, but afterward I kept noticing long lines whenever I passed by.

It’s definitely one of those popular Osaka dessert spots

that draws a crowd.

I forgot to take a photo of the storefront, so I grabbed this from Google Maps.

This isn’t a sit-down café where you can hang out inside.

It’s a takeout-only dessert shop

specializing in strawberry sweets.

They had all kinds of strawberry desserts,

including tanghulu-style candied fruit, strawberry mochi,

strawberry cake, cupcakes, ice cream, and parfaits.

The strawberries were big, glossy, and honestly everything looked delicious.

My husband isn’t really into super sweet desserts,

so I just bought one cupcake for myself.

Even though it was just one tiny cupcake,

they packed it so carefully in a box.

There wasn’t really anywhere nearby to sit and eat, so we went into a Starbucks close by,

ordered coffee, and opened it there.

Ta-da. I bought the cupcake that comes in a glass jar,

and if I remember right, it was around 800 yen, or about $5 to $6.

The flavor was familiar, but somehow better than expected.

It absolutely deserves its reputation as one of the best Dotonbori desserts.

The strawberries were sweet and fresh, and the cream was delicious too.

At the very bottom, there was something like Lotus biscuit crumbs and granola,

so it stayed tasty all the way to the last bite.

I wanted to try more items,

but I never found the right timing during the trip, which I still regret a little.

Osaka Egg Tart Review: Lord Stow’s in Dotonbori, Osaka, Japan

Next up is Lord Stow’s.

This is the No. 1 egg tart shop from Macau,

and luckily for Osaka, they have a branch here too.

I’m still wondering why they haven’t opened in Korea yet.

Like Strawberry Mania,

this is also a tiny takeout-only shop.

There’s often a line out front,

but because everyone is just grabbing takeout, it moves pretty quickly.

If you’re not rushing to your next stop, it’s worth the wait.

Besides their signature egg tart (320 yen, about $2),

they also had crème brûlée (350 yen, about $2.50).

There were also strawberry, chocolate, white chocolate, caramel, and matcha tarts, all 370 yen each.

They even had a chestnut tart for 470 yen.

The boxes on the right were for sets of 4 or 6 egg tarts,

but there’s no discount for buying more.

A box of 4 is 320 yen x 4 = 1,280 yen,

and a box of 6 is 320 yen x 6 = 1,920 yen.

We bought one box of four and took it back to our hotel.

But I totally forgot to take a photo of the actual tarts inside.

So this display-case photo will have to do.

But seriously, they were so good. Some things really do live up to the hype.

Even though this is an overseas branch, the flavor didn’t seem off at all.

Compared with the egg tarts you usually find at bakeries in Korea,

there’s this tiny difference I can’t quite explain, and it just makes them better.

I’m actually going to Macau soon,

and I already know I’ll be buying these every time I see them there.

I’d happily recommend both of these dessert spots.

If you’re heading to Osaka, definitely try them at least once.
