Osaka Castle Review: A Quick Must-See Stop in Osaka, Japan

Osaka Castle review in Osaka, Japan

Osaka Castle review: a quick look at one of the top places to visit in Osaka, Japan.

I missed Osaka Castle on my first trip to Osaka,

so I made sure to visit on my second one.

It’s not necessarily a place you need to visit over and over,

but if you’re traveling to Osaka, Japan,

it’s absolutely one of those must-see landmarks you should experience at least once.

Osaka Castle Review: Basic Info

Osaka Castle was first built in 1583

by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

After being destroyed and rebuilt multiple times,

it was eventually restored to the form you see today.

The castle’s main tower, the tenshukaku (main keep), rises 8 stories high,

and from the top-floor observatory,

you can take in a sweeping view of Osaka city.

We took a taxi from Dotonbori,

and got dropped off near the entrance, which made things easy.

The entire castle grounds are part of a huge park,

and the castle itself is surrounded by a moat.

Just keep in mind that it’s a fairly long walk

from the entrance to the castle itself.

Osaka Castle Visiting Information

Osaka Castle Park is open 24 hours.

The tenshukaku is open from 9 AM to 5 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM.

It’s generally open year-round with no regular closing day,

but there are a few dates around the New Year holiday

when the tenshukaku is closed to visitors.

If you’re planning a visit,

it’s worth checking in advance.

You can confirm the latest schedule through the official website link on Google Maps.

As of late 2024, it was closed from 12/28 to 1/1.

Osaka Castle Main Keep Admission Fee

Admission is 600 yen for adults,

and yes, you can buy tickets on-site.

But since this is such a popular tourist attraction,

the ticket line can easily take 20 to 30 minutes or more.

If you book online in advance,

you can skip the line and enter directly with a QR code,

so if your schedule is tight, definitely reserve ahead.

All three were priced similarly,

at around the high 5,000 KRW range, or about $4 to $5.

That said, your final price can vary

depending on what coupons or discount codes you have,

so it’s worth comparing before you book.

Middle school students and younger can enter for free,

and admission is also free if you’re using the Osaka Amazing Pass.

Best Season to Visit Osaka Castle

We visited in winter,

but the scenery is even more beautiful

during cherry blossom season in spring or fall foliage season in autumn.

Expected timing for 2025

Cherry blossom season

Late March to early April

(peak bloom: early April)

Fall foliage season

Mid-November to early December

(peak color: late November)

We went in December, and it was still impressive.

One photo tip if you’re shooting the castle:

when you’re facing it from the main gate,

the elevator structure is visible on the left side, which makes the view a little less pretty.

If possible, take your wide shots from the right side instead.

That angle looks more classic and much more photogenic.

Because we were short on time, we didn’t make it inside the tenshukaku,

but I was still happy just to see such a meaningful historic site in person.

It’s not far from central Osaka, Japan,

and if you’re like us and only want to walk around the outside,

about 15 minutes is enough.

Even if you don’t have a lot of time,

I still recommend stopping by at least once.
