Best Osaka Namba Snacks Near Nankai Namba Station

If you need a quick snack near Nankai Namba Station in Osaka, Japan, these were the two stops I kept coming back to: 551 Horai for its famous butaman (steamed pork buns) and Truffle mini Bakery for flaky pastries and dangerously good rusks.

I was staying near Swissotel Nankai Osaka, so both spots were incredibly easy to reach on foot. One is a classic Osaka food stop that pretty much everyone knows, and the other ended up being my personal favorite for a grab-and-go breakfast or late-night snack.

551 Horai Near Nankai Namba Station, Osaka

One of Osaka’s most iconic chains is 551 Horai. You’ll find branches across the Kansai region, but for a lot of travelers, trying it in Osaka is practically a rite of passage.

This time, instead of braving the packed counters in Dotonbori or inside the department stores, I stopped by the 551 Horai Namba-naka Store, which was close to my hotel and much easier for takeout.

I stopped in after a bowl of ramen at Ippudo across the street and picked up a few things to bring back to the hotel.

What I liked most about this branch was the timing. I usually skip 551 Horai when I see the huge lines at the Dotonbori location, but when I came here around 7 p.m., there was barely any wait. Only two people were ahead of me.

There didn’t seem to be a dine-in area here, just a small waiting space with chairs.

What to Order at 551 Horai: Butaman and Amazu Dango

The signature item here is the butaman, a fluffy steamed pork bun filled with a juicy pork and onion mixture. It’s the thing most people are lining up for, and for good reason. Across all branches, they reportedly sell around 170,000 a day.

I don’t usually gravitate toward buns with a thicker, bread-like wrapper, but 551 Horai is so famous that I had to try it at least once, so I ordered two.

While I was ordering, a staff member also pointed out another item that looked like meatballs and recommended it, so I added that too.

The item was labeled Amazu Dango, which is basically meatballs coated in a sweet-and-tangy sauce.

For reference, 2 butaman cost 460 yen, and 10 Amazu Dango were 420 yen. Card payment was accepted, which made things easy.

By the time I finished ordering and walked back outside, the line had already grown a lot longer, so if you hate waiting, going a little earlier in the evening seems like a smart move.

551 Horai Review: Is the Famous Butaman Worth It?

Back at the hotel, I opened everything up. They include mustard with the butaman, and I definitely recommend using it. The sharpness helps cut through the richness of the filling.

The buns are honestly pretty cute when you open the box.

I liked how generously they were filled, but for me, the pork was a little sweeter and heavier than I expected. The first bite was great, but by the second, it started to feel a bit rich. With mustard, though, it was much better balanced.

My honest take: if it’s your first time, order one per person rather than going overboard. It’s absolutely worth trying as one of the best-known Osaka snacks, but it may not be the kind of thing everyone wants to eat in bulk.

I also opened the Amazu Dango, and this one surprised me. There was a lot of sauce, enough that it felt more like a side dish to eat with rice than a casual snack.

The meatballs themselves were meaty and decent, but the sauce leaned pretty vinegary and sweet-and-sour. Personally, this one wasn’t for me. I ate it cold, and I suspect it would have been better reheated in the microwave.

I also snapped this while walking around Dotonbori: the 551 Horai main store. As expected, the line was long. I’m not convinced it tastes any different from the other branches, so if convenience matters, I’d happily choose the quieter Namba-naka location again.

Truffle mini Bakery at Nankai Namba Station, Osaka

The second stop I’d recommend for Osaka Namba snacks is Truffle mini Bakery, a smaller branch of Truffle Bakery directly connected to Nankai Namba Station.

Because I was staying nearby, I ended up going twice. I’d already tried their bread in Umeda and loved it, so I made a point of checking out the Namba location too.

Since this is the mini branch, the selection is a little smaller, and there’s no seating. Still, it’s an excellent grab-and-go bakery if you want breakfast near Namba Station or a snack to take back to your hotel.

Even with the smaller setup, there were still plenty of tempting options.

Prices seemed to start in the 200 to 300 yen range, which felt pretty reasonable for the quality.

There were also a few more unusual breads that you don’t see everywhere. If you’re not sure what to get, the shop highlights its BEST 1, 2, and 3 picks, which makes choosing a lot easier.

They also sell extras like pound cake and spreads, including yogurt butter.

You’ll also find drip coffee, cheese cookies, bottled water, and other packaged items.

There was even branded merch for sale.

Like many places in Japan now, they charge for paper bags.

I skipped buying one and just had them put everything into my 551 Horai bag instead.

What I Tried at Truffle mini Bakery

I’m pretty sure one of the pastries I picked up was a pain au chocolat, and it was excellent. The pastry quality here is genuinely good.

But the real standout for me was the rusk. So good. Crispy, buttery, and perfect with coffee.

The rusks also travel well and don’t crush easily, which makes them a great snack or souvenir to bring home. I bought extra and took them all the way back with me, and honestly, I wish I’d bought even more.

Where to Get the Best Snacks in Namba, Osaka

If you’re looking for where to eat near Nankai Namba Station or just want a few easy Osaka Namba snacks, these two spots are both worth knowing.

551 Horai is the classic pick if you want to try one of Osaka’s best-known local foods, especially the famous butaman. Truffle mini Bakery, on the other hand, is the one I’d go back to without hesitation for pastries, coffee pairings, and take-home snacks.

If you’re staying around Namba, doing a quick snack run to both is an easy win.
