A look inside St. Stephen’s Cathedral, one of the best places to visit in Vienna, Austria

St. Stephen's Cathedral exterior in Vienna

If you’re planning a trip to Vienna, Austria,

this is one landmark you absolutely shouldn’t skip:

St. Stephen’s Cathedral,

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

St. Stephen’s Cathedral
Stephansplatz 3, 1010 Wien, Austria

It’s right in Vienna’s city center,

so you don’t have to go out of your way to visit.

It’s the kind of sightseeing spot you can easily stop by while exploring the city.

Walking through central Vienna

As you walk around central Vienna…

St. Stephen's Cathedral towering over the street

this massive cathedral suddenly appears right in front of you.

With its Romanesque and Gothic architecture,

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is stunning before you even step inside.

This cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Austria,

and the colorful mosaic roof tiles

look even more impressive in person.

St. Stephen's Cathedral lit up at night

It’s beautifully lit up at night too, which makes it one of the most memorable places to visit in Vienna, Austria.

The spire is so tall that it’s honestly hard to fit into a single frame.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna Admission Fees

Ticket information at St. Stephen's Cathedral

You can also visit the inside,

and entry to the main nave is free!

St. Stephen's Cathedral ticket options

You can rent an audio guide,

and the South Tower, North Tower, and catacombs require separate paid admission.

For adults, the audio guide is 7 euros,

the catacombs tour is also 7 euros, the South Tower is 6.5 euros,

the North Tower is 7 euros, and the all-inclusive ticket is 25 euros.

The South Tower observation deck is the highest,

and the reason it’s actually a little cheaper than the North Tower

is because you have to climb a whopping 343 steps.

I heard the view is amazing,

but since I was in the late stages of pregnancy,

there was no way I was hiking all the way to the top, so I skipped it.

Opening Hours

The visiting hours on the official website

are a little confusing at first,

because each area has different hours.

Opening hours sign at St. Stephen's Cathedral

The free-access area

Sundays and public holidays: 13:00 to 16:30

That’s how it’s currently operated.

I’ve summarized the catacombs, South Tower, and North Tower hours in the table below.

Interior entrance of St. Stephen's Cathedral

Since this is an active church where Mass is still held,

it’s best to keep especially quiet if a service is in progress.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna Interior Tour

The moment you walk in,

the soaring ceiling and ornate details are completely overwhelming in the best way.

The ceiling is said to be 39 meters high,

and it honestly makes you wonder how people centuries ago built something like this.

Chandeliers inside St. Stephen's Cathedral

The chandeliers add even more drama to the space.

Stained glass at St. Stephen's Cathedral

The stained glass windows, which depict stories from the Bible,

are another highlight of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

They’re beautiful even at a glance with all that color,

but when sunlight pours through them, they become even more stunning.

Crucifix statue inside the cathedral

There’s also a statue of Jesus on the cross.

Apparently there’s another famous sorrowful Jesus statue here too,

but I couldn’t find where it was.

Detailed sculpture inside St. Stephen's CathedralArchitectural details inside the cathedral

The sculptures you see throughout the cathedral are incredibly detailed.

If you just do a quick walk-through, you’ll finish fast,

but if you stop and really look at each piece,

you could easily spend quite a while here.

Interior view of St. Stephen's Cathedral nave

I do think I would’ve understood and appreciated it more

if I had rented the audio guide

or joined a guided tour with explanations.

I didn’t have enough time to stay long, which was a little disappointing.

Another interior angle of St. Stephen's Cathedral

If you have more time,

I think it would be worth booking a tour

so you can walk through the cathedral while hearing the full story behind what you’re seeing.

Main altar view from a distance

To see the main altar and certain areas up close,

you’ll need a paid ticket.

I’m sure it would be even better from nearby,

but honestly, it still looks impressive even from a distance.

Organ Performance

There’s also a massive organ inside the cathedral,

and it sounds incredible (there’s a video below).

Every Thursday evening,

a Giant Organ Concert is held inside the cathedral,

where you can listen to an hour of rich, deep music

produced through the organ’s 12,000 pipes.

Besides the Giant Organ performance,

you can also book seasonal concerts like Mozart’s Requiem

and Christmas performances,

so it’s worth checking what’s on during your trip.

Visitor area inside St. Stephen's Cathedral

There doesn’t seem to be a strict dress code,

but since this is a sacred space,

it’s best to avoid overly revealing outfits

or anything with offensive language or disrespectful messages.

I didn’t get a photo, but there’s also a souvenir shop inside.

I didn’t end up buying anything,

but it was still fun to browse.

If you’re visiting Vienna, Austria,

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of those essential stops.

Both the exterior and interior are absolutely beautiful,

and if you just explore the free-access areas,

it doesn’t take very long at all,

so definitely make time to stop by.
